Why did you become a goalkeeper?
Arnaud Olivier has been with RFC Seraing for about six years now, so he can almost be called a youth product. Nevertheless, his career did not start at Seraing, nor as a goalkeeper. Arnaud’s first steps on the football field were as a central defender. When the goalkeeper didn’t want to play goalie anymore and his dad knew it would be something for him, the decision was easily made. A daredevil who is afraid of nothing, yes, that too is being a goalkeeper, but when this is your “calling” you will never leave.
Which famous goalkeeper would you compare yourself to and why?
For many younger, but also older goalkeepers Marc-André Ter Stegen is a great example of what a modern goalkeeper is all about. It is certainly a style of play every goalkeeper wants to emulate. Not always easy, because we don’t all have the same talent as him. Even if you would like to play this way, every goalkeeper has his good and less good qualities. This might not always be in line with this style of play. Therefore, it is important to definitely try to adopt the style of play, but then adjust it with your own qualities. In this way, you can also be an example for others.
What are the most important characteristics that you look for in a goalkeeper’s glove?
Every goalkeeper has different priorities when it comes to choosing their goalkeeper gloves. Young goalkeepers and parents who have not been goalkeepers themselves often choose what they like best. As you get older and gain more experience as a goalkeeper, you will have tried on more and more goalkeeper gloves and you will soon be able to differentiate not only between what you like, but also between what you like and what you don’t like. The most important factor of goalkeeper gloves should be the same for every goalkeeper, namely GRIP. Without grip, you are nothing as a goalkeeper, because what good is a beautiful save, but you can’t hold onto the ball and then it is scored anyway? Nothing indeed, because if you could hold onto that ball and give your team the win, then you would be the hero of the match. Furthermore, Arnaud prefers the double elastic wrist closure. Many brands bring out models without a closure but offer sufficient protection, which is why the double elastic closure is great. It gives good support to the wrists, which can prevent injuries.
How do you keep your goalkeeper gloves in optimal condition?
Keeping gloves moist is the most important part of goalkeeper gloves during training or matches. Not only for grip, but also for durability. When gloves are too dry, especially on artificial grass fields, the latex will wear out quickly when it comes into contact with the synthetic grass. When they are moist, they will glide better over the synthetic grass, which will result in less damage to the latex.
Besides football, studies are very important, how do you see the future?
Arnaud Olivier is in the collège Saint Véronique in Liège where he will finish his last year. He certainly hasn’t made any plans for the future yet, which is not so obvious in these strange times. That is why he prefers to leave it at that and look day by day at what the future will bring. He will continue to work hard to make his dream of going further in football come true.
What advice would you give to young goalkeepers trying to break through?
Arnaud Olivier will let his young experience speak for itself and he already knows what he has experienced in this young career. No matter how talented you are, no matter how better the other goalies are, you have to keep working hard to become a better goalie. Life is full of surprises and you have to be ready to take that moment when it comes. Playing football at Elite level is tough as a youngster, because you hear great stories at school about what they did at the weekend, how long they got to stay up. You, on the other hand, have to make sacrifices again and again to be able to start the match in the best possible way. Don’t let this put you off, the prizes are only handed out at the finish line!
